The Thassos Island

One glance of sunset in Thassos

Thassos Island is often described as"the North Aegean 's green emerald".Thassos is the northest island in the Aegean Sea near the Macedonian coast. Thick forests, sparkling waters, the golden beaches together with the generously offered shade of the trees that grow till down the sea are considered to be an integral part of Thassos. The simple hospitable people and the remainders of the powerful ancient Thassos feature the island that was once called "golden island" because of existence of gold. Thassos is a volcanic island, 398 q.km. in size, 25km. in length and approximately 20kms in width. The internal part of the island is mountainous. The isalnd's highest mountain is the Ipsario (1.204 metres.), ideal for walks. There is also a long, well constructed road of about 100km. around the island, which makes easier its exploration. Timber, oil and wine production, sheep raising, fishing and the extraction of lead, zinc and marble are considered to be Thassos means of living..
